How To Choose The Best Lift Kit

Lift Kit

Lift kits help vehicles get the extra height to tackle water crossings, beach tracks, and rutted trails. Aside from providing better performance off the road, lift kits also add to the visual aesthetics of a 4x4 vehicle. But, before you decide to buy that kit and give your vehicle some extra height, there are some things you need to know.

Difference between Body Lift Kit and a Suspension Lift Kit

There are lift kits to give your vehicle extra ground clearance so you can go off road without much difficulty. Some kits simply give your vehicle extra height to make it look good but will not change the original ground clearance of the vehicle.

  • A suspension lift kit that raises a 4WD or a truck, like the Suzuki Grand Vitara lift kit, helps achieve higher ground clearance. Since these vehicles are designed for diverse terrains, their chassis, when lifted, give improved ground clearance. It enables the driver to go through rough terrains without worrying about damaging the undercarriage.

Kits, like the Holden Colorado lift kit, replace the components of the stock suspension to dramatically add ground clearance and provide for larger tyres. However, the kits that add too much height can seriously impact vehicle handling to such an extent that they may be dangerous for on-road driving.

  • Body lift kits, on the other hand, raise a car without changes to the suspension system. It is the simplest type of lift kit, and it allows you to lift the car some inches, with the wheels and suspension keeping their original height. Body lift kits do not affect the handling and ride quality of the vehicle.

Find the Correct Lift Kit Size for Your Vehicle

Let us say you have been eyeing the Navara lift kit, but are not sure about it. To find out which size of lift kit you want, you need to know the type of tyres you want on your vehicle and the increase in height needed to install those tyres. You must know:

  • The year and make of your vehicle
  • Model of your vehicle
  • Rim offset
  • Diameter and width of the new tyre
  • Current ground clearance of vehicle (the lift of your vehicle needs to be such that the new tires will not rub or cut onto the vehicle’s frame)
In Australia, there are rules regarding how high you can legally lift your vehicle. It would be best if you do some research before you make your final decision.
