Choosing the right 4wd suspension system
Finding a good quality 4wd suspension system can make your trip much more comfortable, as well as safer - especially on bumpy surfaces and uneven terrain where there's always a chance of taking a dip or hitting an obstacle at high speeds. The working principle behind these systems is simple – they absorb bumps and use shock absorbers and leaf springs to reduce bouncing motion to the passengers whilst distributing weight more evenly across all the wheels so traction isn't compromised on rough surfaces by any specific wheel doing more work than others.
Following are the factors to consider while choosing a 4wd suspension system.
Weight Capacity –
One needs to keep in mind the maximum weight the suspension system can take. For instance, if your vehicle weighs more than 4.5 tonnes the suspension system needs to be of good quality with an adequate load-bearing capacity or else it will tear apart. Shock Absorbers – The shock absorbers installed on the vehicle are of utmost importance. They need to be good enough to bear any extra weight, or the vibrations and undulations while travelling over uneven terrain. They should be in working condition, and they should be properly mounted, balanced, and aligned.
4wd Flex -
Plates – Another important factor is the 4wd flex plate. The flexplate takes a lot of weight on the front and rear of the vehicle, therefore, it needs to be of good quality. The flexplate needs to be strong and durable. This in turn ensures a smooth drive when travelling over any terrain. Drive Shaft – The drive shaft plays a very important role in 4wd suspension systems. It needs to be of good quality; so the vibrations, undulations, shocks, etc. are not transferred to the cabin.
Comfort –
The suspension system needs to be comfortable for passengers. It must not be too harsh or too stiff. Another element of comfort could be the suspension system's ability to maintain consistent tyre pressure, as properly fitted and maintained tyres can significantly reduce tyre wear, and improve the vehicle's handling.
Durability –
Last but not least; the suspension system needs to be durable, no matter how many kilometres you drive over uneven terrain or how many potholes or bumps you hit. It needs to last for a very long time. Also, the components in the suspension system need to be durable. The bolts and nuts and leaf springs need to be durable enough.
Having a broken or damaged 4wd suspension system can wreak havoc on your trip, especially if you are travelling over rough terrain. Therefore, it is vital that you check and maintain your vehicle's 4wd suspension system on a regular basis.
