A Brief Account of Various Types of Suspensions
Suspensions are amongst the major components of a vehicle's mechanical anatomy. Depending on the model and its functional principles, there are various types of suspension, and each of them is different from the others from a structural and functional point of view. Here on this page, let us take a bird’s eye view of some leading types of suspensions.
4x4 Suspensions
4x4 suspension system is made of coil springs, leaf springs, IFS or Independent Front Suspension, TTB or Twin Traction Beam front axle that comes in two varieties - coil spring version (the more popular one) and leaf spring version. Besides, this suspension has something called spring rate, which is required to deflect a spring by 1 inch. It also has bump stops and limit straps.
4WD Suspensions
4WD suspensions come in leaf spring, coil spring live axle varieties, or coil spring independent suspension varieties. There are two fundamental parts of this suspension system -the springs and the various components they attach to - either the live axle or the independent suspension. Shock absorbers, commonly called dampers, are also a part of this suspension system.
Air Suspension System
In an Air Suspension System, an air spring or airbag is used instead of a metal spring to support the vehicle on the axle. This particular type of suspension system follows the principle of utilising compressed air for varying the height of the vehicle’s suspension system. In other words, this is a suspension system in which air properties provide a cushioning effect. A typical air suspension system has an air compressor, air accumulator, supply line, and airbag.
Bilstein Suspension
The Bilstein suspension comes in three varieties - B4, B6, and B8. The B4 variety represents the best driving experience, along with the safety of a standard vehicle. It restores the characteristics of the original ride for maximum traction, safety, and precise handling. The B6 comes in the form of a gas pressure shock absorber, and the B8 is tailored to bemuse with specialised lowering springs.
Ensure to buy a suspension system from a reliable supplier for a hassle-free experience.
